The American Red Cross on Haiti – now that’s good PR

After the disaster in Haiti that has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and thousands dead, the American Red Cross jumped in to do what they do best… disaster relief. Recently, the American Red Cross launched a texting campaign to raise money for disasters and disseminate information about blood inventory levels.

Thanks to the texts that started coming to our phones shortly after the news broke about the earthquake in Haiti, the American Red Cross has already raised $800,000. From a public relations or public affairs standpoint, that’s good business.

A Baltimore Sun blogger said, “Mobile giving may be one of the technological hallmarks of this latest major disaster, and how successful such campaigns turn out to be could influence nonprofit fundraising in the future.”

The news is all over it. Daily Candy, an insider’s guide to different cities sent it out to its 16,800+ subscribers daily also promoted the texting campaign today.

The organization’s twitter account has been pouring out donation information too. Believe it or not, I think we are seeing a brilliant non-profit fundraising campaign unfold.
