Dear Earth – We Got Your Back. Love, HCK2

Saving the earth is kind of a big task. It’s not something you can do in one afternoon. After all, trees take years to grow and the ecosystems don’t spontaneously manifest themselves (except in our company fridge sometimes). But if we come together and make slow changes over time, we just might have a shot at preventing further damage to this great big rotating orb we call home.

So here’s a fun fact. Globally, over 70% of trees harvested to make paper come from old growth forests (the kind we want to save) and not from recycled fibers and tree farms (the kind we can cut down, Paul-Bunyon style, and replant, without hurting the earth). Forests are our best defense against an all-out global wide heat stroke, but we must work together to support responsible forestry if we want to protect the future of our nice little world.

Unfortunately, lots of less-than-scrupulous companies cut down precious old forests because it’s cheaper than doing it the right way. To add insult to injury, a number of these habitat-pillagers are clear-cutting rainforests to make tissue products. You know, toilet paper and Kleenex. (I’m lookin’ at you, Kimberly-Clark). And no, we don’t say bless you.

A number of proactive environmental groups are making great strides to expose and halt these irresponsible paper manufacturers. And the good news is, they are making great inroads through a maze of red tape and corporate irresponsibility. Yet we’ve got a ways to go.

Here’s where you and I come in. A lot of the [pretty awesome] work HCK2 does – annual reports, brochures, catalogs, and such – is ultimately printed. And lucky for us, we have the power to make choices that will have a permanent impact. For instance, our designers can specify a wide-range of recycled, post-consumer stock made in carbon-neutral facilities (Yay Neenah!). We also have the ability to use soy inks and water-based coatings to eliminate the harmful ooze that once went into the environment and made three-eyed fishes in nearby ponds. (Ok, slight exaggeration, but you know what I mean). We actively seek out and partner with printers who are Forest Stewardship Council certified – the dudes we credit for setting standards for responsible forestry and holding the world accountable. FSC rocks.

We could go on and on, but hopefully you get the picture. We like the earth. We hope it sticks around for a long time, and maybe, just maybe the decisions we make on a daily basis will help it endure. In sum, we work together to make sure that piece makes a big imprint – with a zero carbon footprint.
